For a woodsier base, there is the Normaway Inn (800-565-9463, www.normaway.com), a lodge surrounded by a series of cottages near the Margaree River, one of the world's best fly-fishing spots for salmon

My two favorite inns in the province are both in Cape Breton; Dave MacDonald's wonderful Normaway Inn ($68-$135 per night; 800-565-9463, www.normaway.com) in the Margaree River Valley, with its beautiful grounds, snug cottages, and fine food...

When we got to our last stop, the Normaway Inn, a secluded lodge and cabins tucked away in the hills of the Margaree River Valley, the proprietor, an energetic man named Dave MacDonald, met us with a proposition.

"You got to go to the dance, bud!" he said. "It'll only take 45 minutes!" I didn't know him well enough yet to know he was, as usual, being wildly optimistic.....

The Best
By A Yahoo! Contributor from Philadelphia, PA USA

The inn was well located for day trips, and a wonderful place to come "home" to at the end of a long day. Outstanding food, wine list very respectable, put you "back in time" without the inconveniences of earlier years. A wonderful secret - and a place I hope to return to with my children.

Loved it!

A beautiful inn in a beautiful area, I remember staying here years ago - driving up the magnificent drive. Wonderful salmon dinner, sitting by the fireplace, and a local girl singing wonderful gaelic songs after dinner. I hope to return some day.

Frommer's Review
From the moment you turn down the drive lined with tall Scotch pines, you'll feel you're in another world. The lodge is located on some 200 hectares (500 acres), was built in 1928, and has been run by the MacDonald family since the 1940s.

Trip Advisor "A "must stay" place on Cape Breton Island"
The Normaway Inn & Cabins

I have travelled many continents and countries, stayed in many types of lodging with many experiences. The Normaway and it's charms stole my Highland heart years ago!
I have been going to the Normaway for over two decades. It started out as a place to stay while fishing the elusive Atlantic Salmon on the Margaree River. We just needed a place to hang our waders at night. It ended up being much more. The ambience of the place and it's people will steal your heart.
